Inspirations for Tables of Content

Below are some ideas for a table of content. You can always go for a traditional table of content or do something more exciting.

Make sure that the information is easy to find. A good design is one that is easy to understand. This should not stop you from making it fun though.

Some of the images can be found at this good compilation of table of content designs: Smashing Magazine – Table of Content: Creative Examples.

Work on Assessment 1

You will work on Assessment 1 in class for the first 2 hours. You should be close to completion and hopefully be able to complete Assessment 1 by the end of class.

Compare the Completed Experience Planner

Use the attached experience planner, that we completed in class based on the CentreLink experience: Experience Planner- filled in partly after class 04.

Use it to help you create an experience planner for the event PDF that you are creating. This will give you the ability to focus on fixing negative experiences and planning for a positive experience with a product or service.

Inspirations for Layouts

Inspirations for layouts can be found at various places:

  • Creative Hotlist this site has a large selection of solid design ideas. You will find many design concepts that are inspiring to look at and are complete as a work.
  • Born Book is a beautiful and inspiring interactive PDF document.
  • Issuu is a site that allows you to publish your work and you can find a large number of publications there.
  • Lonny is the website of the Lonny Magazine, a online home decor magazine that highlights inspiring interiors, innovative designers, and the latest things to buy for interiors. Their online interactive magazines are good examples of interactive PDFs and layouts.

More example of interactive PDFs (posted last week): Adobe Magazine, Font Magazine, Know-It-All Guidebook to King West, Vektoria Magazine, Blanket Magazine Revolution Art Magazine, Revolution Art Issue 40,

Compare the Completed Experience Planner

Attached is our experience planner, that we completed in class based on the CentreLink experience: Experience Planner- filled in partly after class 04.

Just to clarify, the idea with this experience planner is to have a more detailed look at the actual experience of a customer or user. This will give you the ability to focus on fixing negative experiences and planning for a positive experience with a product or service.

Discuss Assessment 1

Assessment 1 requires of you to plan an interactive PDF for an event of your choice. Assessment 1 will not require for you to create this interactive PDF, you will just plan for it.

Interactive PDFs and apps are good ways to promote events. We will focus on the creation of an interactive PDF in this class. Events can be promoted with style in this format. It allows for the promotion of the event and sponsors. Links to websites, addresses, phone numbers, embedded videos, there are a lot of options to include hypermedia elements in a PDF.

Example of interactive PDFs: Adobe Magazine, Font Magazine, Know-It-All Guidebook to King West, Vektoria Magazine, Blanket Magazine Revolution Art Magazine, Revolution Art Issue 40,

Ideas for Events

In class we discussed ideas for events:

  • Parties
  • Film Festivals (MIFF, French Film Festival, German Film Festival, Italian Film Festival, …)
  • Food Festivals (Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, Festivale, Tasting Australia, Great Barrier Feast, …)
  • Music Festivals (Stereosonic, Summadayze, Big Day Out, Soundwave, …)
  • Sport Events (Skateboard Event, Football World Cup 2014 in Brazil, Olympics, Melbourne Cup, …)
  • Health Events
  • Holiday Resorts (for tourists)
  • Fashion Week
  • Cultural Festival (Phil Fest)

Ideas for the Style, Look and Feel

To set yourself apart from the rest it is important to create work that is visually inspiring and in a style that appeals to the right target audience, but that is also within the spirit of time or contemporary. Be careful not to create the same old and to do something that you were inspired to by a software tutorial. The result would be most likely boring.

Look at contemporary design ideas and influences. Start your search in my links: Links to Inspire You (at the right side of this blog) include links to sites such as:

Each of these sites is filled with great inspirational designs! Use their Search tabs to access their databases.

Other ways to find inspirational designs and contemporary graphics

Look for the works of contemporary graphic artists and designers:

Jamie McKelvie

Jamie has a comic artist and illustrator. His works are interesting plays on figure/ground relationship (or positive and negative space).

If you look at the illustration below, her body is very abstract and basically just made up of a number of diagonal lines. Her shoulder and upper body are shown in shape, but towards the lower end of the shirt the lines are just left unfinished. I find this an interesting treatment and the illustration appeals.

The star in the top right is a cutout of the the diagonal lines, which are already very dynamic. The title has been highly stylised. The texture has an aged, scratched finish and the arrangement of the type is very interesting, it looks like display type used in a shop front.

Children’s Book Illustrations

There are many different styles of children’s book illustrations. One thing they all have in common is their target audience: children. That is what makes them so unique and often you can sense a desire in the illustrator to add a lot of story telling qualities and depth to the characters.

The interesting thing about children’s books as a source of inspiration is that you can search by designer or era.

You might be surprised that iconic graphic designer Saul Bass illustrated a children’s book. ‘Henri’s Walk to Paris’ was published in 1962 and if you look at the pages you will recognise the style of Bass. I strongly believe that children should be exposed to good graphic design ideas. I don’t mean the theory, but the children’s book should be inspiring. Below are some pages from ‘Henri’s Walk to Paris’.

  • Completing last week’s Experience Planner
  • Design the experience for a product of your choice

I WILL POST THIS AT 7:30AM AND POST UPDATES THROUGH THE DAY WITH MORE DETAILED EXPLANATIONS

Designing a Holistic Customer Experience

Let us recapture some of last class:

  • When we plan for a multimedia production (or any type of production really) we should plan with the customer or user experience in mind. This means that we actually design the playground for the customer experience.
  • Good design tells a story!
  • What story will your design tell?

Completing Last Week’s Experience Planner

Please complete last week’s experience planner: Class-02-task – filled in partly after class 02.

Design the Experience for a Product of Your Choice

Now, try to apply the Experience Planner to a new product.

The new product can be a website: so, imagine a new website. Write down a few facts: name and purpose (be descriptive for the purpose), service/product (what will the user get from it), other aspects.

Apply the experience planner to this website! Give it a fair shot and complete all points! Take your time to do this and do not rush it like a task that is annoying, but savor it like a task that anticipates the pleasures that your future users will have.

Use the same template.

Multimedia Planning

Let us start by having a look of this excerpt of a planning meeting:

‘GRANTED subject to the following condition(s):

1. The development must be begun not later than the expiration of three years beginning with the date of this permission.

REASON: Required to be imposed pursuant to Section 91 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990.

2. The permission shall relate to the development as shown on Plan Drawing No’s 001 – Scale 1:500, 001 – Scale 1:2500 and the plan entitles Overalls/Planning CF20.

REASON: For the avoidance of doubt and to ensure that the development is carried out in accordance with the submitted plans.

3. This permission shall be implemented in accordance with the proposal as amended by letter and plan received on the 25th of February 2013.

REASON: For the avoidance of doubt since the proposal was the subject of agreed amendments.

4. This permission shall expire after 25 years following the date that electricity generated from the turbine is first connected to the grid. The Local Planning Authority shall be notified of such date in writing not later than one month from the making of such connection. After this 25-year period, the structure 66 hereby authorised shall be removed from the site and the land reinstated to its former condition to the satisfaction of the Local Planning Authority unless the Local Planning Authority has granted a further permission for this development.

REASON: In order to prevent the structure remaining on site after its use has terminated, in the interests of the visual amenity of the area and in order to avoid conflict with the Local Planning Authority’s control of development within the open countryside. In accordance with the guidance contained within the NPPF, Policies G1, ENV3, ENV25 and ENV26 of the Districtwide Local Plan, Policies DMG1, DME2 and DME5 and Key Statements EN2 and EN3 of the Regulation 22 Submission Draft Ribble Valley Core Strategy.

5. Within 12 months of the cessation of electricity generation, or if the turbine ceases to be operational for a continuous period of 6 months, the turbine and mast shall be removed and the land restored to its former condition, to the satisfaction of the Local Planning Authority.

ARE YOU ASLEEP YET?

Most planning processes and planning meetings are one of the boring moments in the life of a professional. Why is that? I believe there are a few reasons:

  • incompetence
  • lack of passion
  • no direction
  • no understanding of the product
  • no concept of the target audience
  • no concept of the holistic overall experience for a customer
  • laziness
  • lack of motivation

I think this list could go on for a bit longer, but my point is obvious. Not being engaged with the direction of a business, with the product or service of a business and with customers and customer needs can lead to a mediocre work environment and boring planning meetings.

How can you avoid that in your approach to planning a multimedia production? The answer can be found in you and with the help of some so-called experts who might have been battling with this problem as well.

Let us start by looking at experiences out of our own lives.

Looking at Our Own Experiences

Let us sit back in this cold room and think about some of the more pleasant expereinces in our own life. What do we like the most? What experiences are the ones that we love to remember? What moments do we feel at one with our inner soul, relaxed and just plain happy?

This man looks very happy and like he has found a place and moment of true happiness! Photo by mcandea on morgueFiles

Well, each of us might find inner happiness or total calm at different times doing different things. I would like you to sit back for 1 minute and feel free to close your eyes and think of a moment or two that you can share with the others.

Do not continue reading until you have thought of that or those experience/s and moment/s.

Some of us have there most enjoyable moments in nature at the beach, Photo by rivediamoci on morgueFiles

Thank you for taking the time and for sharing your experiences. Keep those thoughts close to you when you are planning experiences for future clients and target audiences.

Collective Experiences

Collective experiences are central to the way we understand ourselves, after all our species is a collective one. We like to assemble in groups, we are strong in numbers and we collectively learn of each other.

Every generation seems to have a song, band or event that rallies a large number:

The 50s had Rock’n’Roll with singers such as Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry – Buddy Holly – Rave On

The 60s had many influences and famous bands like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Jimmy Hendrix, The Who and many others – The Who – My Generation

The 70s had bands such as Abba, Marvin Gaye, The Jackson 5, Curtis Mayfield, Kool & The Gang, Barry White, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, AC/DC and so many others – Marvin Gaye – What’s Going On

The 80s had bands including New Order, Joy Division, The Smiths, The Cure, Phil Collins, Duran Duran, Queen, U2, Aha, The Pixies, but also Whitney Houston, and other commercially successful artists – U2 – Pride

Well, you get the picture…

Music is a powerful medium – and creates long lasting memories. As much as our hearing sense is an extremely powerful sense so is smell and taste and you might be able to share a story about some of your strongest memories related to a smell.

In my case I remember the cooking of my beloved nonna, so little and lovable! 😉

Gnocchi taste the best if homemade by an Italian nonna. Photo by Alvimann on morgueFile
Gnocchi taste the best if homemade by an Italian nonna. Photo by Alvimann on morgueFile

Other experiences that I can think of that people love to refer to are riding a motorcycle or driving and of cause flying. It must be that sense of freedom, speed and the smell of petrol that makes people feel so good.

What to Plan With

So, to bring it to a point: when we plan for a multimedia production (or any type of production really) we should plan with the experience that the user or customer will have. So, plan with the User Experience in mind.

Introduction to Delivery Format

This class will be delivered in 4 hour schedules every Tuesday morning . The content will be posted on this blog as well as on MyKangan. Tasks, discussions and research will be conducted inside the 4 hour slot and at home.

You are expected to work towards goals independently and to be able to operate as part of a team. In a work place you will sometimes be lucky to work with people that you easily get along with, but unfortunately you might often have to work with people that you might not easily get along with. A professional looks beyond this and finds ways to function in a professional environment with a range of personalities.

Assessments:

Important: You need to submit all your assessments on MyKangan. It is your responsibility to follow up due dates and access to MyKangan.

  1. Day 1 Task – this task is a simple comprehension task to establish student participation. (due: after the first class)
  2. Assessment 1 MM Production – The Event – due: 10/9/13 5:30pm
  3. Assessment 2 – due: 24/9/13 5:30pm

RAE – Research and Exploration or Class of Federico

This blog will be or main form of contact. It will be accessible from anywhere as long as you have internet access.

Make sure to explore the links when you have some free time. The best learning is done by yourself exploring and questioning.
