  3. Work on a title for the game:
  • Research titles for similar games to yours, collect your findings in form of a basic moodboard
  • Brainstorm ideas for the feel and overall look of the game and for the title
  • Sketch concepts for a title
  • Research typefaces online (eg look at http://www.dafont .com ), collect about 3-5 suitable typefaces and download the type file onto your computer

2. Draw a minimum of 30 curved and straight lines varying your line strength. Copy the examples and create your own.

3. Draw 20 ellipses with varying line thickness. Try to hide the start and end points by commencing the line lightly and completing it lightly.

4. Draw both examples to your right. Good luck!

5. Draw the 4 examples below – sets of 10 straight lines decreasing in line weight.

6. Draw 20 circles with varying line thickness. Try to hide the start and end points by commencing the line lightly and completing it lightly.

Assessment 1 (Cert IV in IDM)

Development of a Character and Interior Concepts

Due Date: 20/10/2012

Grade: 30% of final grade

Brief: Think of your favourite game character and design an offspring. We are interested in an exciting addition of personality and criteria. The offspring needs to be clearly related to the parent, yet needs to have interesting characteristics, which make for a deep gaming experience.

Now add the interior spaces that your character will encounter. What will the rooms and interiors in your character’s world look like?

Respond to all the questions and perform all tasks below! E-mail your link to your assessment to me.

1. Create two digital Moodboards in Photoshop:

Dimensions: 1280 x 1024px, Resolution: 100ppi

1) Your first moodboard should have a clear focus on Landscapes, colour scheme, font choices and needs to include stylistic decisions as well. Create it in Photoshop and save it as a JPG.

2) Your second moodboard should have images of interior spaces of the existing game and interiors that you want to use as inspiration or reference.

2. Create a styleboard:

Create a styleboard for your character, describing the style and features. (Use links at Classoffederico)

3. Create two Prezi presentations:

Create two online presentations using www.prezi.com

1)      Your first presentation needs to

  1. define the target audience
  2. Show your research the existing character (images and information)
  3. Show your brainstorms of characteristics and traits for the offspring (we are interested in visual traits)
  4. Include the styleboard for your character
  5. Show a minimum of 5 pages of thumbnails and character development sketches (scans)
  6. Include your detailed sketch of your character against a interior of your game (see point 4 of this assessment)

2)      Your second presentation needs to include:

  1. Your research of cityscapes/landscapes and interiors (partly from the original game and from other sources)
  2. A moodboard for cityscapes and/or landscapes
  3. A moodboard for interior spaces
  4. 5 pages of sketches for interiors, including close-ups and entire rooms or spaces
  5. A range of colours for the interiors

Insert the links to both presentations in the blue box and e-mail to me.

4. Create a final concept for your character

Sketch it in more detail against an interior for the game.

CLASS 6

30/8/12 – Thursday  (11am – 2pm)

 

Last week’s homework was:  Commence the moodboard at home and draw for a minimum of 10mins daily!

  3. Moodboard using Photoshop
    Create a Moodboard using the following steps:

    1. Create a folder for your images by the same name
    2. Find all images and inspirations using the internet, your environment and your camera or mobile as well as books and other printed material and scan the images
    3. Save all images in images folder (this is obvious, but it is very common that images are somewhere on a USB)
    4. Place images (File>place) and adjust size, position and angle (always use Shift to maintain correct proportion) and confirm with Enter
    5. Work with Layers (each image should have a layer). Place will automatically create a layer
    6. Use the Move Tool (V) in combination with the Auto Select button, to be able to select objects and layers by clicking on it.
    7. Work with Layer Blending Modes (in the Layer palette)
    8. Use Selection Tools – Quick Selection, Magic Wand and Polygonal Lasso Tool (experiment with Refine Edge function)
    9. Work with Masks – select what you would like to have visible and click on the Mask button (bottom of Layer palette) – or to make the non-selected part visible press Alt + Mask button
    10. Use the Mask Edge or Refine Mask Edge function (Mask Palette>Mask Edge button) to improve the finish of your selection
    11. While in mask mode work with Brush Tool (B) to either hide or make visible
    12. I will look at your progress in class! J

Create the moodboard for on screen using Photoshop,  dim: 1280x1024px, resoultion: 100ppi

Focus on the game world (Concept art). Think about images that could inspire you for the game world and collect in digital format.

Commence the moodboard at home, you will be able to complete in class.

  1. Students had to perform/commence the following task- they were at an imaginary function held by Bioware, who was holding a competition to offer employment to a young designer. The job would go to the person, who would best respond to:

    2. Write a brief based on the verbal instruction
    3. Define the target audience
    4. Research the existing character
    5. Brainstorm characteristics and traits for offspring (we are interested in visual traits)
    6. Develop 5 pages of thumbnails and character development sketches
    7. Students e-mail works with all names and dates and (if ready) sketches
